I really want to build….

If I’m honest, I’d probably be designing websites even if this wasn’t my line of work - in fact I was for years whilst my day job was working as an Accountant in Financial roles, albeit systems and web oriented roles.
But the fact is I’ve been building websites and web applications since 1995, long before finance and the web became synomous; one day I’ll sit down and evaluate exactly what I find so compelling about building for the world wide web. I often wonder.
It could be in my blood - my late Grandad used to paint, prolifically infact, I’d go to my Grandparents’ house and his works were hung on every wall. I remember his den, full of hardboard sections, oil paints, brushes and half completed pictures, it was an enchanting place.
I don’t know if he was obsessive about painting, but I’m starting to wonder if I’m obsessive about web design and web application development. Painting and web design are both forms of expression, its just the medium and technicalities that are different - though I think I’d prefer scripting XHTML 1.1 syntax over trying to mix oil paints to a specific shade!
Anyway to confirm my OCD, I’ve actually got a list of things in my mind that I MUST build, not necessarilly for commerical gain, just because my mind says, “that’d be a good idea” , and because I want to know if I can! Here’s a couple of them;
- Secure Document Exchange - simple point to point but secure whilst not dependent on Public/Private key encryption.
- Fund Cloud - I’ve recently rekindled my pension plans - could I tell who was the best Fund Management Company? no chance. Seems like a great application for Data (or Tag) Clouds.
There are many more. One I’ve been able to take off my list recently is Cliksee, an email marketing campaign tracking application. This was one example of something I just wanted to build, it doesn’t make any money but people ARE using it!!!!! Ultimately that’s reward in-itself.
